Yes, I am afraid it is that special time of year again. The time when the good people of this country take on their favourite charity by taking off their clothes. The time for the rest of us to shop, to dig deep, to look though rose-tinted spectacles and choose the best nude charity calendars of 2012. And this year, there seem to be more calendars than ever before.

A part of you might want to scream ‘People of Britain, put your clothes back on!’ But no country on earth has taken to this naked act of charity more than the Brits.

That's probably true. As a percentage of the total population, we've probably seen more undraped Englishwomen than any other nationality. But although the extended headline begs Britons to stop losing their kit, the article itself presents a more friendly attitude. Ms Moir gives plenty of welcome attention to dozens of good people and their many worthy charities, which is really what it's all about.

The continued level of interest in this most analogue of devices is all the more remarkable given that it has, at least in theory, been superseded by technology. Now smartphones come equipped with personal diary planners and online calendars are available to all.
But wander through any shopping centre and it quickly becomes apparent that the traditional version remains popular.

Let's see here. We could get a smallish flat screen dedicated monitor and mount it on the kitchen wall near the refrigerator (I'm not brave enough to try to hang it on the fridge door). Define it as a secondary display to the nearest computer and show a browser window of Google Calendar. Update it with a nearby wireless keyboard. Download your favorite images from the Hubble and use them as wallpaper. The technology is up to it.

But is that really more efficient than a whiteboard and dry-erase marker? Or, if you're on a budget, a paper calendar and a 39 cent pen?

To a man with a hammer, the world looks like a nail. I love my computer, but I still have a calendar next to the back door.

Luann's "Hot Firefighters Calendar"

OK, this one's not real. I just thought you might like to know about it. And anything that further mainstreams the concept is OK by me.

In the current storyline in Luann, the fire department has lost funding for their school fire safety program. TJ suggests they produce a "Hot Firefighters Calendar", and much to Brad's surprise, everyone is on board with the idea -- even Toni, the one firefighter everyone agrees belongs in such a calendar.

The arc started on September 15, which is about a week away from rolling off Comics.com's archive. This isn't the first "cheesecake/beefcake" calendar to hit the funny pages: Stone Soup's Wally and Phil appeared in one back in 2002.

UPDATE: The arc ended sweetly, at least for now, last Saturday (10/12) when the last photo was shot. The "calendar" may return when it's eventually "published".
