Unforgettable Shetland

It’s a daring fundraising mission which has become the talk of an entire Scottish island.

Locals on Shetland have been persuaded to strip off for a nude calendar, which is being sold to raise funds for a new cancer support centre.

But the identities of the models are being kept a closely guarded secret, sparking speculation over who has dared to bare all. [Daily Express.]

In this interesting twist, the models' faces are not visible because they are turned away from the camera or seen in silhouette (see Shetlopedia). See more at the Daily Record and BBC News. The calendars were ten pounds each, but the official site is no longer taking orders.

Colorado Firefighters

Patrick Kramer knows he is going to take a lot of razzing from fellow firefighters when the 2010 Colorado Firefighter Calendar is debuted today.

Kramer, a firefighter engineer who appears in the calendar shirtless and hanging off the side of a train, said he’ll put up with the teasing in exchange for helping a charity.

The calendar is produced by Fired Up for Kids, a nonprofit that donates proceeds from calendar sales to The Children’s Hospital Burn Center.

Does Female Nudity Always Objectify Women?

From Sociological Images: Does Female Nudity Always Objectify Women?:

Giorgio S. sent us a link to a news story about a feminist organization, Scottish Women’s Aid, who turned down a donation earned through the sale of a girly calendar featuring naked women. They argued that accepting the donation would be akin to supporting the sex trade. Here’s the link; it’s worth taking a look.

The story raises some great questions about when women’s nakedness is objectification. Is it always objectifying to show women’s naked bodies? Is objectification inevitable in a sexist society? Is objectification sometimes in the eye of the beholder? Or are there instances, even in a sexist society, in which women’s naked bodies might avoid objectification or, even, resist it?

The women, in this instance, are the employees of Coco’s Hair Design. Here are some stills from the video clip that give us an idea of what the calendar looked like:

Oxford Undressed

A group of daredevil scholars agreed to pose for a saucy naked calendar to raise money for poverty-stricken third world countries.

These brainy undergraduates at Oxford University seem have to mislaid their gowns…and all the rest of their clothing.

Around 60 students took part in the calendar in aid of Oxford-based charity TravelAid.
Comes in academic year 2009-2010 or calendar year 2010, £10.00 each. Buy it here. More information and photos from the Sun, the Daily Mail, Momento24, ABC News, SmasHits... Well, all over, actually. I mean, this is Oxford.

Knitting Noras

KNITTING might have a sober image — but the Knitting Noras prove there is a surprising amount of fun to be had with a pair of needles.

The group’s members have been photographed in the act of “extreme knitting”, and now they are posing naked for a calendar to raise money for The Christie cancer trust.
It's far too early in the process for purchase information, but read about it in the Bolton News, and at their Naked Knitting Calendar 2010 blog.

Sorry for the delay...

Sometimes life intervenes. I hope to return to regular posting here -- probably not daily, but at least three times a week. I've got some catching up to do, as there are still plenty of good-hearted naked people out there.
